Tackle IBD
with microfluidics
OUR MOTIVATION

Spasmodic, sudden course
Inflammatory bowel diseases (short: IBD) are long-term conditions associated with inflammations in the gastrointestinal tract.
Although the principal types of IBD, Crohns´s disease and ulcerative colitis, effect different parts of the gastrointestinal tract, they have some things in common: Both are incurable and restrain the daily life of patients.

Diarrhoea

Fever

Performance problems

Fatigue

Lack of concentration
PATIENTS
300.000
More than 300.000 people in Germany alone and many more worldwide are suffering from IBDs on a daily basis. We would like to help these people.
4000
NEW CASES
Germany alone, has an increasing number of cases. Every year, an average of 4000 new cases add up and the incidence rate is continuously increasing.
15-45
YEARS OLD
The majority of patients are between 15 and 45 years old. Therefore, most people with an IBD suffer from symptoms very early on in life and need permanent medical treatment.

Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases often suffer from restraints to their daily life.
We want to help them to control their disease on their own and consequently enjoy a liberated life without any restraints.

OUR PROJECT

THE CHALLENGE
Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases are severely limited in their everyday lives and can only rely on the monitoring by their doctors in order to keep track of disease progress.
Therefore, we would like to bring the monitoring to the patients home. This allows them to monitor independently without having to visit the doctor's office.
We want to generate fast, quantitative and precise results to alert the patient to possible exacerbations.
Additionally, the system should be low-cost and affordable for every patient.

THE VISION
-
Sample filtration and dilution
-
Sample application on a microfluidic chip
-
biological reaction on the chip by lateral flow assay
-
evaluation via portable analyzer
-
quantitative result

THE TECHNOLOGY
-
handy chip size
-
Cheap and easy to process polymer material
-
No active parts, due to capillary effect
-
on Chip antibody-antigen reaction
-
fluorescence based detection

OUR EVENTS
As a young team, it's important for us to participate in certain events that brings us closer to our goals and help us get in touch with potential partners.
So, if you are interested in getting to know us visit us at one of these events:
COSIMA 2019
COSIMA is a competition for students in the field of microsystem-applications and takes place during the microsystem technologie congress 2019 at the 28th to 30th of october 2019 in Berlin.
Here, we made the first place, secured the prize money and a spot a the international version of COSIMA in china.

iCAN 2021

The international version of the COSIMA-competition in Nanjing between the 26th and 28th of June in 2020.
With three other german teams we are competing against students around the world.
